Every Google Ranking Update Since 2022: Dates, Durations and What Each One Did

If your traffic fell on a particular day, the first useful question is which update was running that day. This is the complete list — 36 confirmed ranking updates from February 2022 to August 2026, with the exact start date and rollout length Google published for each.

Short Answer

How do I find out which Google update hit my site? Pull the exact date your traffic changed from Search Console, then match it against the table below. A drop that begins inside a rollout window is almost certainly that update. The type then tells you what to do: a core update is a quality re-rating with no appeal, a spam update enforces a written policy you have to find and remove, and they need completely different work.

Status · checked 22 August 2026

The most recent confirmed update is the August 2026 spam update, which began on 18 August and finished rolling out around 20 August. Every date on this page comes from Google’s Search Status Dashboard — the only authoritative record of when an update actually ran.

The complete list

Google publishes a start date and a rollout duration, not a finish date. To find when an update finished, add the duration to the start — and treat the result as approximate, because that is exactly how precise Google’s own figure is.

What does each type actually mean for you?

The label is not cosmetic. It decides what the fix is, and whether there is one.

How long does a rollout actually take?

Long enough that a drop rarely arrives all at once, which is why people so often misdate their own incident. Core updates in this list have run from 6 days (December 2024) to 45 days — that longest one being March 2024, the update that reworked how helpfulness is assessed. Most land between twelve days and three weeks.

Spam updates have become dramatically faster. The three that ran in 2026 took 19½ hours, 2 days 1 hour and 2 days 16 hours. Compare that with 26 days for the August 2025 spam update, or 15 days for October 2023. That difference is a usable diagnostic on its own: a drop that appears and stabilises inside about 48 hours now looks far more like spam enforcement than a quality re-rating.

How often does Google ship a core update?

Less often than it used to, and that matters more than it sounds.

Year Core updates When
20244March, August, November, December
20253March, June, December
2026 so far2March, May

Because recovery from a core update is gated on the next core update, the number of core updates in a year is the number of chances your site gets to be re-rated. Four became three, then two. As of this update there have been 93 days since the May 2026 core update began — already the longest gap of the year.

If you fixed your site in June and nothing has moved, that is not evidence the work failed. There has been no re-rating event since. The core update playbook covers what to do with that wait.

What should you do when an update lands?

  1. Get the exact date first. Search Console, not analytics — you want the day impressions turned, not the day sessions did.
  2. Match it to the table. Inside a rollout window is a strong signal. Outside every window, look at your own site instead: a migration, a template change, an accidental noindex.
  3. Read the type before you act. Quality work on a spam-policy problem wastes months, and a policy hunt on a core-update drop finds nothing because there is nothing to find.
  4. Do not re-stamp your dates. Changing published dates sitewide to look fresh is one of the few responses that reliably makes things worse.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which Google update hit my site?

Take the exact date your Search Console impressions turned and match it against the table above. If the date falls inside a rollout window, that update is the likely cause. If it falls outside every window, the cause is more likely something you changed — a migration, a redesign, a robots or noindex mistake — than anything Google shipped.

What is the difference between a core update and a spam update?

A core update re-assesses which pages best answer a query; nothing is wrong with your site in a policy sense, and there is no appeal. A spam update enforces a specific written policy, which means something identifiable is wrong and must be removed. The fixes do not overlap, so identifying the type correctly is the single highest-value thing you can do early.

When is the next Google core update?

Google does not announce them in advance. Across the 15 core updates confirmed between May 2022 and May 2026, the gap between consecutive releases ran from 28 days to 184, with a median of 107. Releases have also become less frequent — four in 2024, three in 2025, two so far in 2026 — which means fewer chances per year to be re-rated. The last one began on 21 May 2026.

Is there still a helpful content update?

No. There were exactly three, and the last began on 14 September 2023. Since then Google has shipped 17 ranking updates and none carried the name. The assessment now runs inside core ranking rather than as a separate system.

How long after an update should I expect to recover?

For a core-update drop, plan for roughly four months from the point your fixes are complete — a median 107-day gap to the next release, plus a rollout that has recently run 12 to 18 days. The widely repeated claim that recovery is strictly gated on the next core update is only half right: Google states you do not necessarily have to wait, because it ships smaller unannounced core updates continuously. In practice, partial movement can appear at any time, while a site-wide re-rating usually becomes visible at a named update. For a spam-policy demotion, the timeline depends on finding and removing the violation, not on waiting for a scheduled event. Full breakdown by cause →

If you are trying to work out which one hit you

Matching a date to a table is the easy half. Working out why a particular update re-rated your site, and what specifically to change, is the part that takes a second pair of eyes. The Recovery Audit is a fixed-price diagnosis: what happened, why, and a prioritised plan — five days, no retainer.
